How we use IFRA 51

All Stock Fragrance formulations are IFRA compliant. IFRA β€” the International Fragrance Association β€” is the global governing body for fragrance safety; its Standards set maximum recommended usage levels for fragrance materials based on ingredient composition, product type, and how a product is realistically used. We currently formulate to the IFRA 51st Amendment (announced June 30, 2023).

IFRA limits are determined by the total level of allergens in the formula and the amount of skin contact. Because every limit is formula-specific, mixing or modifying an oil voids our documentation. IFRA documentation is posted on every fragrance page and can be viewed or downloaded. Outside of IFRA, your final dosage comes down to your preference and how much fragrance your base or product can hold. When a product could fit more than one category, use the most restrictive. For the full breakdown of all 12 IFRA categories and how to apply them, read our Understanding the IFRA 51st Amendment guide.

Typical dosages are general starting points; your working rate depends on the base, scent-throw target, and the oil's IFRA Category maximum in its RDS.

Ordering Guidance

Compounding fragrance oil for a production batch

Our general rule of thumb is to order at least a 6-month supply of fragrance oil and place re-orders 4–6 weeks before running out. For orders over 50 lbs, we'll typically run a production batch just for your order. Standard production lead time is 10–14 business days. Summer (May–September) is the busiest time for oil production, so you may see longer lead times then.

Standard shelf life is 12 months from production, though oils typically last much longer when stored properly β€” see our blog on oxidation & storage and getting the most out of your fragrance oils.

Planning a larger run? Browse bulk fragrance oils, or explore custom fragrance design if you need a formula tailored to your product.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much fragrance oil should I use for candles or soap?

The ideal dosage varies by product. Use our calculator as a guide and always refer to IFRA standards for safe usage limits. Candle dosages typically range between 6–10%, while soaps and body products often use lower percentages.

What if my fragrance oil load exceeds the IFRA limit?

Always stay within IFRA limits. If your scent strength needs improvement, consider adjusting your base formulation or contact us to customize your fragrance for better performance at lower dosages.

Do you offer non-toxic and clean formulations?

Yes β€” all our fragrance oils are non-toxic, cruelty-free, vegan, and GMO-free. They are made in the USA and meet clean beauty standards.

How does the calculator estimate cost?

Enter your oil's price per pound and the calculator shows what the fragrance will cost β€” per item and for the whole batch. Leave it blank to just see how much oil you need.

Can you use too much fragrance oil?

Yes. Overloading can cause stability issues and make products unsafe. This calculator is only meant to determine how much fragrance oil is needed for production.

Can I mix or blend your fragrance oils myself?

All of our fragrances are finished blends and not meant to be mixed or altered. Blending oils will void all safety and regulatory documentation, as these are formula-specific.

Should I measure fragrance oil by weight or by volume?

Typically by weight, since the density of oils can vary.

How much fragrance oil do I need for a full production run?

Total oil needed is based on dosage, container size, and number of units β€” and don't forget a little extra for waste.

Should I test a fragrance oil before scaling to a full batch?

Yes. Testing is always necessary and an essential part of production for final product performance, evaluation, and stability.
